Make your job applications more effective

Every tool you use when applying for jobs offers the opportunity to use words – too many of them. Any point of contact with a recruiter or employer gives you a very brief window to get in the ‘probable yes’, ‘maybe’ or ‘no’ piles. In tough times ‘maybe’ effectively means ‘no’.

Most shortlisting decisions are quick-fire and not particularly attentive to detail, so it pays to focus on your key messages. Always condense. Think about what you could say in less than 3 minutes about your background, your history, your target job, or reasons why you match a role.

Opening moments matter – the opening two sentences of your CV or cover letter, or the first words you speak in a telephone conversation or meeting. Practise openings so you sound natural, positive and convincing.
